Tendulkar Farewell Series 1st Test: India rout Windies by an innings inside three days

India registered a comfortable innings and 51-run victory over West Indies in less than three days of the first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

After Rohit Sharma (177) and Ravichandran Ashwin (124) scored centuries to help India register 453 in the first innings that gave the hosts a lead of 219, Mohammed Shami and Ashwin ripped through the West Indies batting as they were bundled out for a modest 168.

Shami claimed five wickets in his 13.1 overs he bowled while Ashwin scalped three in his 19 overs.

The two teams will next meet in Mumbai for the second Test, which will Sachin Tendulkar's 200th and last Test.

WEST INDIES INNINGS

Shami takes his fifth wicket and that's the end. India have registered a comfortable innings and 51 runs victory.

Ashwin claims his third wicket. It was a well setup plan to get Best out. Just one more to go for India to celebrate. WI 159-9 in 51.3 overs.

Wickets tumbling for West Indies and it looks very likely India can seal of the match today. WI 153-8 in 49 overs.

V Permaul run out 0 (1b 0x4 0x6)

Shami gets another. That's amazing bowling. That's his fourth wicket. WI 152-7 in 48.4 overs.

That's brilliant stuff from Shami. Reverse swing and it takes the middle stump. WI 152-6 in 48.2 overs.

West Indies still trail by 67 runs. WI 151-5 in 48 overs.

Two experienced batsmen Chanderpaul and Sammy trying to ensure no further damage is done for the day. WI 137-5 in 44 overs.

West Indies slumping here. They lose another but credit to Shami who has bowled well throughout the match. WI 125-5 in 38 overs.

Ashwin removes well-settled Bravo to claim his second wicket. This is trouble for Windies. They need big partnerships here. WI 120-4 in 34.2 overs.

West Indies were in a bit of trouble at 112 for three against India at tea. The visitors still trail by 107 runs.

Chris Gayle (33) made a strong start before he was out holing one to Kohli. Kieran Powell (36) and Darren Bravo (35 not out) consolidated the innings and were settling in when India made a double strike just before tea.

AFTERNOON SESSION

Another one falls quickly. Samuels is unlucky as the ball looked to be drifting down the leg. WI 110-3 in 32 overs.

Ashwin gives the breakthrough. Powell and Bravo were well settled. WI 101-2 in 30.4 overs.

Two successive boundaries from Powell. Windies trail by 142 runs. WI 77-1 in 25 overs.

Tendulkar comes into bowl.

Runs hardly coming in. But Windies ensuring they lose no quick wickets. WI 55-1 in 20 overs.

Kumar drops Powell off Ojha. The Windies batsmen are struggling against the spin. WI 47-1 in 15 overs.

After all the hitting, Kumar has the last laugh as Gayle departs. WI 33-1 in 10 overs.

Powell is yet to open the account as Gayle does all the scoring. WI 25-0 in 9 overs.

Gayle races to 23 off the total 23. Dealing in boundaries. WI 23-0 in 6 overs.

Gayle gets going. Hammers two boundaries. WI 9-0 in 2 overs.

Chris Gayle and Kieran Powell get to the middle. They have a big task on hand. WI 1-0 in 1 over.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who was unbeaten on 92 overnight, scored 124 while Rohit Sharma made 177 as India scored 453 all out in 129.4 overs.

The duo shared a record 280-run partnership for the seventh wicket to ensure India have a healthy 219 runs lead. This was Ashwin's second Test hundred.

For West Indies, Shane Shillingford claimed six wickets while Veerasammy Permaul took two.

INDIA INNINGS

The last Indian wicket falls minutes before lunch as Permaul gets his second. India all out for 453 in 129.4 overs.

That's another wicket for Shillingford. Gayle takes a fine catch in the slips as Kumar has to walk back. Ind 451-9 in 128.1 overs.

Kumar gets a boundary as India get past 450. They lead by 216 runs. Ind 451-8 in 128 overs.

Ashwin also departs. A fine innings as Shillingford claims his five-wicket haul. Ind 444-8 in 126.3 overs.

Windies finally taste success. Rohit walks back as he gets a long applause. Ind 436-7 in 124 overs.

R Sharma lbw b Permaul 177 (301b 23x4 1x6)

A boundary of Sharma and India go past 400. This has been a wonderful batting session from both of them. Ind 403-6 in 114 overs.

The partnership reaches 235 and is a record against West Indies for the seventh wicket. Sharma reaches 150. Ind 391-6 in 110 overs.

Sharma looks to be in the comfort zone early in the day playing his shots easily. Ind 376-6 in 108 overs.

A bright start to Day 3 as Ashwin gets to his century. His second in Tests. He's played a gem of a knock under pressure. Ind 368-6 in 106 overs.

India will be keen to stretch the lead further when they enter the third day of the first Test against West Indies in Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

After having lost their top order without much contribution, Rohit Sharma played an amazing knock on his debut Test match to remain unbeaten on 127 and also sharing a great partnership with Ashwin who was 92 not out.

West Indies did really well early part of day two with Shane Shillingford claiming four wickets to put India in a state of bother before Sharma changed it around.
