Tendulkar Farewell Series 1st Test India vs Windies, Day 2: Rohit, Ashwin power India to 354, lead by 120 runs

Rohit Sharma took the honours on the second day scoring a superb unbeaten century on his debut to put India in a strong position against West Indies in the first Test in Kolkata.

Sharma was unbeaten on 127 as India made 354 for six in 102 overs as the hosts took a lead of 120 runs at stumps.

Starting the day at 37 for no loss in reply to Windies 234, India found themselves in trouble when they lost five wickets for just 83 in the first session after spinner Shane Shillingford ran through the top order to claim four wickets.

The Eden Garden crowds were left disappointed when Sachin Tendulkar, playing his 199th Test, was adjudged lbw for just 10.

But another Mumbaikar made up for that loss as Sharma played with a lot of confidence to share to crucial partnerships with Mahendra Singh Dhoni (42) and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Ashwin also was equally impressive as he remained unbeaten on 92 as the duo shared an unbroken 198 runs partnership.

EVENING SESSION

India reach 350 in 100 overs to lead by 116 runs. This is frustrating for West Indies.

Sharma in brilliant form as he smashes three boundaries in Samuel's over as India's lead reaches 100. Ind 334-6 in 94 overs.

Two back to back boundaries. Amazing knock on his debut. Ind 303-6 in 90.2 overs.

New ball has been taken. Windies will look to break into this partnership. Ind 290-6 in 88 overs.

There' stil a minimum of 15 overs to go for the day. India hope to get into position of strength before going to stumps. Ind 288-6 in 87 overs.

India have a lead of 39 runs with this partnership still going strong. Ind 273-6 in 82 overs.

The partnership reaches hundred with a fine boundary from Ashwin. India now looking in a good position. Ind 259-6 in 76 overs.

Ashwin scores a timely half century to help India get out of a difficult situation. Ind 254-6 in 75.1 overs.

India leads by 16 runs. The partnership also reaching 100. It's turned out to be a real good one for India. Ind 250-6 in 74 overs.

After 70 overs, India are 234 for 6.

AFTERNOON SESSION

Rohit Sharma scored an unbeaten 61 and shared two brilliant partnerships with Mahendra Singh Dhoni (42) and Ravichandran Ashwin (38 not out) as India made 229 for six in 68 overs at tea.

India just trail by five runs as Sharma and Ashwin are going strong with an unbroken 73 runs.

A great partnership as Sharma and Ashwin pile on 65 runs to cut the deficit to 13 runs. Ind 221-6 in 65 overs.

Rohit Sharma in the best of the forms. Gets to his half century in his debut Test match. Ind 198-6 in 60.1 overs.

Sharma on 46 as India trail by 51 runs. A half century should be a good start to his Test career. Ind 183-6 in 56 overs.

Finally a change of bowling does the trick and Dhoni is gone. Windies fielders celebrate. Ind 156-6 in 51.1 overs.

Dhoni is showing great form as he reaches 42 while Rohit is on 31. Ind 156-5 in 51 overs.

Partnership crosses 50. India still trial by 97 runs. Ind 136-5 in 46 overs.

MORNING SESSION

The first session belonged to West Indies spinner Shane Shillingford. He claimed four wickets including the priced wicket of Sachin Tendulkar which left India reeling at 120 for 5 in 39 overs on the second day of the first Test.

India were 37 for no loss overnight but lost five quick wickets before captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (21 no) and debutant Rohit Sharma (16 no) revived the innings.The duo shared an unbroken 37-run partnership as India still trail by 114 runs in reply to Windies 234.

This time it's Sharma's turn as he gets two fine hits to the fence. Ind 119-5 in 38 overs.

Two boundaries for Dhoni. The pair slowly settling in. Ind 111-5 in 37 overs.

Dhoni is lucky to get a reprieve. 'Keeper Ramdin fails to latch on to it. Ind 102-5 in 36 overs.

Rohit off the mark in Test cricket with a boundary. He took 13 balls to open his account. Ind 91-5 in 32 overs.

Shillingford is running through India's batting. He picks another as Kohli departs. India in trouble here as they are still 151 runs behind. Ind 83-5 in 30.2 overs

Sachin Tendulkar is gone. The stadium is in shock but they give him a standing ovation as he walks back. India 82-4 in 28.3 overs.

Another wicket for Windies. Sheldon Cottrel gets his first wicket., Ind 79-3 in 27.4 overs.

C Pujara c Ramdin b Cottrell 17 (36b 2x4 0x6)

The first boundary of the day comes in from none other than Tendulkar. He follows it up with another. Huge cheer for that. Ind 67-2 in 23 overs.

And here comes the big man. Sachin Tendulkar comes in to bat in his 199th Test to a huge cheer from the crowd.

M Vijay st Ramdin b Shillingford 26 (75b 2x4 0x6)

Vijay departs. A super spell from Shillingford. Patiently kept bowling a probing line. Ind 57-2 in 20.3 overs

Windies bowlers making good use of the early morning conditions. Ind 50-1 in 17 overs.

The first wicket falls for the day. Dhawan did not look to settled at all and he played on. Ind 42-1 in 14.4 overs.

S Dhawan b Shillingford 23 (34b 4x4 0x6)

That's early morning in Eden Grounds. The stadium slowly filling up. They know there is still time for the Master Blaster to arrive in the middle. For now Vijay and Dhiwan continue from where they had left on Day 1. Ind 38-0 in 13 overs.

India will be hoping to consolidate on a solid start by openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay who breezed to 37 without loss in reply to West Indies' total of 234 when play resumes on day two of the first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday.

Shami Ahmed was the star of the opening day claiming four wickets on his debut with reverse swing.

But all eyes will be on Sachin Tendulkar who is playing his penultimate Test having made his mark by taking a wicket on the opening day.
