Tri-series IND v SL: Sri Lanka thrash India by 161 runs

Sri Lanka bounced back from a heavy defeat at the hands of West Indies to thrash India by 161 runs in the third match of the Tri-Series at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica on Tuesday.

Chasing a mammoth target of 349, India were bowled out for 187 in the 45th over with Jadeja remaining unbeaten on 49.

India suffered a second consecutive defeat since their triumph in the Champions Trophy.

They missed their inspirational captain MS Dhoni as Sri Lanka put into bat blossomed after a cautious start to post 348 for the loss of one wicket.

India were never in the hunt after losing Sharma in the fifth over with Dhawan and Kohli falling in successive overs.

Vijay was bowled by a beauty from Malinga who claimed two for 40.

Spinners Senanayake and Herath throttled the mighty Indian batting line up while Mathews returned excellent figures of 8-2-23-1.

Herath finished with three for 37 while Senanayake had two for 46.

Earlier, the foundation for Sri Lanka's impressive victory was laid by Upul Tharanga and Mahela Jayawardene who scored contrasting centuries during a ground record opening stand of 213.

Sri Lanka spurred by solid centuries from Upul Tharanga (174 not out) and Mahela Jayawardena (107) rattled up a mammoth 348 for one after being put into bat by India.

The duo figured in a record double century opening stand of 213 which is the highest at Sabina Park.

Skipper Angelo Mathews promoting himself after the fall of Jayawardene was unbeaten on 44 off 29 balls adding 135 runs during the unfinished second wicket stand with Tharanga.

Sri Lanka plundered 180 runs in the last 16 overs as Tharanga opened out after a cautious start to hit a career-best ODI score.

Mahela and Tharanga profited from dropped catches and some sloppy Indian fielding.

Jayawardene played some unorthodox shots during his knock of 107 which came off 112 balls and contained nine boundaries and two sixes.

Tharanga was more classical in approach being particularly strong on the off cracking three sixes and 19 fours during his unbeaten knock of 174 which came off 159 balls.

He hit two extraordinary sixes over extra cover.

Mathews smashed four boundaries and a six during his unbeaten 44.

Sri Lanka who were blown away by Gayle in the opening game against West Indies have brought in Kusal Perera and Sachithra Senanayake in place of Jeewan and Ajanta Mendis.

India have brought in Murali Vijay and Shami Ahmed for Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Kohli who becomes India's 22nd ODI captain has won the toss and put Sri Lanka into bat.

There seems to be lots of moisture on the wicket at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica because of overnight rain.

Jeff Dujon predicts the team winning the toss will bowl once again and rain could play a part later in the match.

Dhoni has missed only 37 matches during his entire international career, only six of them were missed because of some injury or fever.

Sri Lanka must be fancing their chances as India are without Dhoni.

Murali Vijay is expected to get a game while Virat Kohli's captaincy will come under focus.

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been ruled out of the remainder of the Tri-Nation Series with a right hamstring strain sustained while batting against the West Indies in his team's first match of the tournament on Sunday at Sabina Park.

His place in the 15-man squad is to be taken by the uncapped 27-year-old batsman Ambati Rayudu.

Vice-captain Virat Kohli, who led the team on the field in Dhoni's absence against the West Indies, takes over as captain for the remainder of the series.

India face Sri Lanka on Tuesday in Kingston with both teams looking for their first points after each lost to the hosts in their respective opening fixtures.

Following that encounter, the tournament shifts to the Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad, for the remaining three preliminary matches at the final, starting with India against the West Indies on Friday.
