It is a chance to Arsene Wenger and Arsenal to show the kind of cut-throat pro-activeness the likes of Manchester United and now, Manchester City have displayed.
No, not only on the field, but here and now in the transfer market.
Reports in the British press this morning claimed that Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen’s move to Tottenham may be at risk.
A clause in Vertonghen's contract entitling him to 15 per cent of the £9.6m deal Ajax have agreed for him is said to be the issue.
Vertonghen was quoted in Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad as saying, “This is a shame. I thought that it would be sorted out much sooner.”
“As it looks now, I’ll be at Ajax on July 2. I’m hoping for a solution, but I’m not expecting a solution.”
Surely the same issues that hit the Spurs deal can affect any other move, but the fact is Arsenal are a big enough club to make it work.
The highly-rated Belgian has impressed Arsene Wenger and is a close friend of Thomas Vermaelen "Arsenal are a magnificent club and I hear a lot of good things about English football," Vertonghen had said.
"If a club of Arsenal's calibre can reach agreement with Ajax, then I will gladly go over.
"I have instructed my agent carefully.
"He knows which clubs I want to join, and Arsenal are one of them."
Arsenal, are you listening?
