Manchester United veteran Paul Scholes has made the startling admission that Manchester City deserved to win the league title last season.

“As much as I don’t want to admit it, City were good to watch and probably played the best football, so from that aspect they were the best team and deserved to win it," Scholes was quoted as saying in the British press.

Only goal difference separated champions City from United at the end of last season after Sergio Aguero's injury time winner ripped them of the title.

More than two months after City became champions, Scholes still can’t bring himself to watch Vincent Kompany lifting the Premier League trophy.

Although it was a bitter pill to swallow for a player born on the Red side of Manchester, he conceded City got what they deserved.

Scholes said: “You always say the best team wins the league – and City were the best team last year.

“The football they played for most of the season was fantastic."

He went so far as to say that City have set the standard for others to follow.

“They have raised the bar and it’s up to us to now kick on and do even better than they did," he said.

“There were spells last season when we didn’t play well and we have to become a better team."

He was at a loss to explain how United failed to defend an eight-point lead in the final six games of the season.

Scholes said: “When City went to Arsenal and got beat, you do think it’s all over.

“But you know you still have a job to do.

“We failed at the end of last season, we should have won the league and didn’t.

“It was a major disappointment to lose the league from there.”

However, this factor would fuel their ambitions of wresting the title from City this season.

He said: “It’s not nice when you see another team celebrating winning the league on the last day of the season and that picture stays with you.

“It is in your head and you don’t want it to happen again.”
