Sometimes, the best buys are in your own backyard.

Brendan Rodgers and the Fenway Group have provided the Anfield faithful with more transfer activity than the club has seen in recent years.

However, Rodgers is finding out that every attack of his – even seemingly risky ones like Tello and Sahin – is met with the need to defend.

A realisation that will stand him in good stead when play actually begins.

Rodgers has likely saved Martin Skrtel from leaving Liverpool, or perhaps it is saving Liverpool from a leaving Skrtel.

Now he must turn his attention to Daniel Agger.

Agger, 27, has drawn the interest of Premier League champions Manchester City and according to some reports Barcelona.

Rodgers has not helped the situation by admitting "every player has his price".

However, the price Liverpool may have to pay for losing Agger may be high.

What the likes of Agger and Skrtel give Liverpool is a solid backbone. There is experience and understanding.

For Rodgers to play his expansive, attractive style of football, he needs a solid base.

Lose Agger and he shakes it up too much.

The other player that Liverpool need to look at is Clint Dempsey.

Experience and consistency will be the other key to Liverpool’s fortunes, especially on a rainy Tuesday night in the Potteries with Stoke on full throttle.

Tiki-taka will not work. An attacker who can hold the ball and turn, head and defend will be needed.

If there is money to be spent, then Dempsey surely is a must-buy.

Clint Dempsey has played 184 games for Fulham, scoring 50 goals.
