Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has been linked to the vacant coaching role at 1860 Munich after the Bundesliga second division side sacked Reiner Maurer.

The 64-year-old Eriksson was at 1860's Allianz Arena, which they share with Bayern Munich, on Friday as a guest of Hamada Iraki, the representative for Sheikh Hasan Adbullah Ismaik, who owns 60 percent of the club.

The Swede watched Munich 1860 lose 2-0 at home to Cologne after goals by Canada's Kevin McKenna and Morocco's Adil Chihi.

"Eriksson is a good friend of Iraki, he was in Munich and used the opportunity to watch a game," 1860 director Robert Schaefer told German daily Bild.

"I wouldn't rule it out that Eriksson will be the 1860 coach in the future."

Eriksson has a colourful CV.

He has coached Manchester City, Sampdoria, Benfica, Lazio, Mexico, the Ivory Coast, Leicester City, as well as also having been director of sport of Notts County and in September was appointed technical director of Thai side BEC Tero Sasana.

Having taken only four points in their last six league games, 1860 Munich are eighth in the second division and sacked Maurer on Saturday after two years in charge.

Reserve team coach Alexander Schmidt has been appointed caretaker coach.
