The news this morning coming out of Old Trafford is about Louis Van Gaal clearing out the extra fat at Manchester United.

The Daily Mail has the number of players being let go at 7.

Really, there are no surprises at the names being mentioned: Nani, Anderson, Wilfried Zaha, Rafael, Will Keane, Javier Hernandez and Marouanne Fellaini.

The surprise if any is that Shinji Kagawa has escaped the cull.

A large section of the Stretford End will be disappointed that Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez is being let go. The Mexican has really endeared himself to the United faithful with his humble, hard-working, goal-scoring ways.

Nevertheless, Chicharito is likely to end up being the key bargaining chip to strike a deal for the likes of Arturo Vidal.

It’s in the defence that Van Gaal still has work to do.

Mats Hummels is proving evasive. Which means all eyes are now on Daley Blind and a new joker in the pack -  Sporting Lisbon and Argentina defender Marcos Rojo?

The online buzz is that Rojo, over last week suddenly began following a number of Manchester United players on Instagram, including Robin van Persie, Adnan Januzaj and Wayne Rooney.

Rojo is the typical swashbuckling, hard-tackling type of defender that Van Gaal likes to have in his back four, or is that three.

Nevertheless after losing out on Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen United will certainly like to close out their defensive deal as soon as possible.

Which puts Daley Blind in the picture.

The Dutch wing-back added fuel to the fire by  saying he would find it difficult to turn down a move to Old Trafford this summer.
