Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has been ruled out of England's friendly international against the Netherlands at Wembley on Wednesday, the Football Association (FA) said Tuesday.

Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott has been called up as a replacement.

Johnson is the fifth player to withdraw from caretaker coach Stuart Pearce's squad following the Manchester United duo of Wayne Rooney and Tom Cleverley as well as Aston Villa's Darren Bent and Tottenham Hotspur's Kyle Walker.

The FA refused to specify the exact nature of Johnson's injury but it is understood he has returned to Liverpool merely as a precaution.

England though have plenty of cover at right-back with Micah Richards, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, as well as Lescott, capable of playing in the position.
