England international and new signing Ricky Lambert believes Liverpool are mentally strong enough to win silverware this season.

The Reds were favourites to win their first English Premier League title since 1989-90 until a loss to Chelsea at home and a draw with Crystal Palace squandered their chances.

On a dramatic final day, despite defeating Newcastle, Manchester City dashed Liverpool dreams by beating West Ham and become champions.

Former Southampton striker Lambert has no doubt Liverpool has the pedigree to overcome this disappointment especially since manager Brendan Rodgers has assembled a top squad.

Lambert was one of the key signings during the close season along with Alberto Moreno, Javi Manquillo, Dejan Lovren, Emre Can, Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic.

"I knew they were a top squad before I joined, I played against them a few times in the last couple of years, so I know how good they are. To get to train with them every day has gone to another level; it's full credit to the manager," said Lambert when asked for his assessment of the squad.

"The sessions he puts on, it gets the full potential out of each and every player, especially the younger ones, they thrive on it. You can see with the young lads coming though: Philly (Coutinho), Lazar (Markovic), it's exciting.

"It's brilliant to be around, he's brought in a few new signings as well, who I think will push us on again."

Lambert is confident the Merseyside club would battle for every trophy this season.

“I can see the confidence in everyone around the club and that they can go on and win something,” he said.

“We are going to be looking for the Premier League (title), first and foremost, and improve on last season. We want to win a cup, too; we’re desperate for silverware.

“I think we are definitely mentally strong enough to go and do it.”

The only target Lambert has set himself this season is to stay fit and strong.

"Try and be as fit as I can for each game and be available, that's what I've always done for the last few years. Just trying to be as fit as I can, giving the manager another option," he said.

"When I get my chance, to give it all. When a goal comes, I will start scoring, I'm confident in my ability."

Ironically, Lambert will get his first opportunity in the opening match of the season against his former club, Southampton.

“I just laughed when I found out we were playing them first up. It was always going to be. I thought it might have been at St Mary’s (Southampton’s home ground) but it’s Anfield. It was inevitable. I can't wait for the Southampton game."

He is also excited at the prospect playing Champions League, but his immmediate focus is the Premier League after the experience of the Brazil World Cup and pre-season tour of the US.

"It's what every player wants, it's something I thought I may of never had in my career, but I've got a chance, so I'm gonna grab it with both hands," said Lambert.

"It's not what we're focused on right now, it's Southampton, we're getting fit and sharp for the Premier League."

Liverpool will open their Premier League campaign against Southampton on Sunday at 4.30pm (UAE time).
