Former Liverpool forward John Barnes has urged the Reds to sign Schalke striker Klass-Jan Huntelaar who has expressed his desire to play in the Premier League.

The £7million-rated Dutch striker, 29, is out of contract at the end of the season and is wanted by Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

"Well there is talk about Klaas-Jan Huntelaar coming in. I think that would be a great signing because we need a player to play in the penalty box. Outside the box we are very good, inside the box we are a little bit light - we don' t look as though we are going to score many goals when the ball comes into the box and I think that Huntelaar is a penalty box player," he was quoted as saying in 7msport.com.

Huntelaar’s agent Arnold Oosterveer said: “Klaas has not decided.

“He’s had offers from England, Italy and Spain. It’s also possible he could stay in Germany.

“He wants his future planned by the winter.

“In the next 45 days he wants to know his next project and it will be decided by his football ambitions and not by money.

“His dream is to fight to win titles in Europe and to have chances to be successful, because today he is one of the best strikers in Europe.”

Last season, the Dutch destroyer scored 48 goals in 47 games for Schalke.

He has grabbed eight in 15 matches so far this campaign.
