Liverpool's Rodgers hopes Gerrard can return to face Hull

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers on Monday revealed England midfielder Steven Gerrard could return from injury in time for his club's Premier League clash against Hull on Wednesday.

Reds captain Gerrard has missed Liverpool's last four matches after suffering a hamstring problem in a win over West Ham at Anfield on December 7.

Asked at his pre-match press conference if Gerrard might be fit to face Hull at Anfield on New Year's Day, Rodgers said: "We will assess that over the next 24 hours.

"Steven has rejoined training so we'll see how he is for Hull."

Gerrard's return would be nicely timed for Rodgers, who said Wales midfielder Joe Allen is set to be sidelined for "a few weeks" with an abductor strain suffered in the second half of Liverpool's 2-1 defeat against Chelsea on Sunday.

Rodgers is also waiting to discover how long Mamadou Sakho's hamstring strain will sideline the French defender following his premature exit towards the end of the match at Stamford Bridge.

"Joe will probably be a few weeks and with Sakho we are just awaiting confirmation," Rodgers said.

"Glen Johnson came off but that was tactical, not injury-enforced, and there are one or two other niggles that we have to assess.

"Jordan Henderson (who took a knock against Chelsea) is fine. He was obviously on his first day of recovery today and is still sore, but he is a real soldier and should be fit."
