Manchester United have a feared forward line, feared wingers, a fearsome defensive line-up (save for Johnny Evans) a world-class goalie… but no midfield enforcer.

Liverpool exposed United’s Achilles’ heel with Sir Alex Ferguson’s pairing of Darren Fletcher and Phil Jones failing.

Michael Carrick and Anderson looked on from the bench, but they too have been far from convincing.

Tom Cleverley’s injury is now going from sticking out like a sore thumb to becoming a genuine wound.

One that could be fatal for United’s league and Europe hopes.

On the blue side of Manchester, Roberto Mancini displayed the wealth of talent he has as his squad buried the Carlos Tevez saga with a scintiallating display against Aston Villa.

Owen Hargreaves came on from the bench as well.

Increasingly, Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder looks like a must-buy for United come January.

Either that or Anderson and Co have to step it up big time.

Sir Alex, the master of the long haul, will know that this time the Premier League title could be wrapped up before January.

With a hole on midfield, a rampant United are dangerously exposed.
