Manchester United have an opportunity to strike back next season by swooping on wantaway Tottenham star Luka Modric.

The 26-year-old Croatian is also a target of newly-crowned Premier League champions Manchester City.

Their Italian manager Roberto Mancini is ready to splash the cash and strengthen their strikeforce by signing Modric and Arsenal's Robin van Persie.

City's intent is clear. They are determined to change the balance of power in the Premier League by capitalising on their first title in 44 years.

United would have to ward off interest from Real Madrid and Chelsea who were willing to offer £40 million last term.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy succeeded in retaining the player last term but they are becoming increasingly worried Modric will succeed with his bid to quit the club.

Ironically, Modric's teammate joined Chelsea in January and is now sporting a Champions League winner's medal.

Modric is set to make another transfer request after next month European Championships, according to the Mirror.
