Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini can rest assured his job is safe even if Manchester United win the title this season.

In a major boost for the Italian ahead of next Monday's derby at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City's owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs, has declared their season a success even if they fall short in the Premier League title race.

City trail United by three points going but have a superior goal difference and could claim a first league crown since 1968 if they win their remaining three matches.

Although Mancini conceded the title race was over after blowing a five-point advantage, they were handed a second chance when United threw away a 4-2 lead to draw 4-4 with Everton on Sunday.

Sheikh Mansour, in rare public comments, told Abu Dhabi TV he was excited to have a shot at the title, but was already pleased with how the season has gone.

"The difference is three points and we do have a chance," he said.

"But whatever happens and even if we don't win I am very happy and satisfied with the players, the team and the management.

"They have performed very well and have improved in their last few matches."
