Al Wasl coach Diego Maradona has rubbished rumours linking his UAE club with Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka.

British newspaper ‘The Daily Express’ reported earlier this week that the 32-year-old Frenchman was eyeing off a move to the UAE when his current contract expires next European summer.

However, the Argentine told reporters that his club had nothing to do with the link.

“I am really surprised to hear this. We don’t have anything to do with Anelka,” Maradona said.

“Of course, I wish that he would come and play for us at Al Wasl, but knowing the wages he gets at Chelsea, I don’t think it is ever going to be possible.

“I also believe he is a pillar of the Chelsea team and I don’t think they will allow him to leave.”

Several big names have headed to UAE on big money in recent months, including David Trezeguet, Asamoah Gyan and Grafite.

However, Maradona did confirm he will be making one more signing before the start of the new league season with Omani defender Mohammed Al Shaiba released.

The Argentine also responded to cynical questions about fears for Al Wasl, who haven’t kept one clean sheet since he took charge.

“If you are scared, then don’t come and watch the matches,” Maradona said.

“You can stay at home and watch DVDs or some comedy series. There is nothing to be scared about in football.”

Maradona later added: “We are concerned with our defence. We are working very hard to improve our defensive skills everyday in training.”
