Newcastle suffered a major blow to top four plans as their Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul suffered an elbow injury while training with the national team.

Krul has returned to Tyneside after suffering the injury in training on Saturday, according to the Daily Mail.

Krul played in the 2-0 win over Turkey in Holland's opening World Cup qualifier on Friday night as he seeks to claim the No 1 jersey from Maarten Stekelenburg.

But he now faces an anxious wait to discover the severity of the injury after being ruled out of the clash with Hungary on Tuesday night.
