Theo Walcott is a doubt for Arsenal's Champions League clash against Schalke in Germany.

The 23-year-old has been ill overnight and is a doubt for the Group B encounter, which will not see the return of Wojciech Szczesny (ankle) despite the goalkeeper joining in with training on Monday.

Aaron Ramsey misses out after sustaining a groin injury in Saturday's defeat at Manchester United and is joined on the sidelines by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (hip), Gervinho (ankle), Kieran Gibbs (thigh), Abou Diaby (thigh) and Tomas Rosicky (hamstring).

Arsene Wenger last night denied he is freezing out Theo Walcott – despite his bizarre absence from Arsenal’s starting line-up, according to the Daily Mirror (https://bit.ly/RaES5w).

Walcott, 23, has not started in the Premier League or Champions League since August and the latest excuse is likely to be illness.

But Wenger insisted he is not leaving out Walcott because the England winger has yet to sign a new contract, despite being offered £75,000 a week to stay.

Wenger said: “I will make a decision on when I know how fit he feels. This is a digestive problem. He has been sick overnight and didn’t practice today, so we have to see how he is tomorrow morning.

“It’s nothing linked to his contract at all. It’s because I’ve played other players, it’s as simple as that. We started the season well, he was injured too.

“He played 40 minutes on Saturday – you can’t say he’s not played.”
