Tottenham have agreed a £36 million fee with Real Madrid for Luka Modric, The Sun (https://bit.ly/PRbLDW) reported in an exclusive.

The Croatia midfielder had expressed his desire to join Jose Mourinho's side but was waiting for the clubs to reach a deal.

Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain had also expressed interest in the 26-year-old, but he had told friends his heart is set on La Liga.

Madrid were reluctant to meet Spurs’ £40m valuation but Mourinho wanted Modric as soon as possible.

According to Madrid newspaper AS, Mourinho wanted the deal completed so that the playmaker can join his squad on their US tour, which starts against David Beckham’s LA Galaxy on Thursday.

Modric almost ruined his chances of a move by refusing to go on Spurs’ pre-season tour.

But Real officials persuaded him to apologise and return.

The deal will bring an end to a saga which began when the Croat demanded a move to Chelsea a year ago which was rejected.
