Spurs' Modric back on for Man Utd, Chelsea

Chelsea and Manchester United have been given another chance to swoop on Tottenham's Croatian playmaker Luka Modric after a deal with Real Madrid stalled over the payment method.

Real are threatening to pull out of a £36 million deal because Spurs want more money up front, according to a report in The Sun.

The Spaniards want to pay £30m initially with the rest over five years.

But Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy insists Madrid must hand over most of the fee in one cash payment — and the remainder in no more than 12 months, it said.

And a White Hart Lane source said: “The chairman is still holding out for £40m, but many think he will accept a little less providing nearly all of the fee is paid up front."

Tottenham are due back home from their US pre-season tour this morning.

The Croatian was hit with an £80,000 ($124,000) fine for refusing to train and missing the club's American tour.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been a long-time admirer of Modric.
