Sir Alex Ferguson must be rueing the fact he let go of Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov during the close season after seeing him perform against Arsenal on Saturday.

Berbatov opted to join Fulham this summer after being reduced to warming the bench at Old Trafford and playing bit part roles.

The former United striker was on fire as he orchestrated Fulham's stirring comeback in tandem with Bryan Ruiz to share the spoils at Emirates Stadium.

The Bulgarian scored 57 goals in 149 games for Manchester United but fell out of favour with Ferguson.

"I left Manchester United with my head held very high," he told The Sun before the Fulham match.

"I gave 100 per cent and no one could doubt my performances, especially when you compare how many minutes I actually played.

"I was the Premier League’s top goalscorer in 2010-11 and never wanted to be on the bench.

"Perhaps I needed to play more but I always accepted the manager’s orders. I never considered myself to be a star — only a forward working for the team."

After being 2-0 down against Arsenal, Ruiz’s corner was headed home by Berbatov for Fulham’s first goal, while Berbatov’s cross for Alex Kacaniklic created the second before Berbatov converted a penalty to put them 3-2 up.

Manchester United have to reason to fear Berbatov since he has regain his appetite for scoring goals.

He added: "It may be more difficult to score and win trophies with Fulham than at United or Spurs.

"But I am focused on scoring goals for Fulham and fighting to get us into the Europa League."
