Wenger asked to go on spending spree

Arsenal’s board is asking Arsene Wenger to spend more money before the season starts next month, the 'Sun' said.
Some executives are upset that the manager’s only major signings are Ivory Coast striker Gervinho, for £11 million ($18 million) and Charlton defender Carl Jenkinson, for 1 million pounds, even though the start of the Premier League season is just three weeks away.
Wenger has concentrated on trying to keep captain Cesc Fabregas and midfielder Samir Nasri as well as sign striker Robin van Persie to a long-term contract despite being given a large amount of money the spend, the newspaper said
Wenger is being urged to close out some of his deals with shareholders and fans becoming increasingly concerned and frustrated with the lack of transfer activity.
Thousands of supporters are turning down the chance to take a season ticket for the coming campaign, it was reported earlier.
The Gunners boss accepts he urgently needs at least one centre-back but has not pounced in the market.
Wenger failed to land Blackburn's Phil Jones, who joined Manchester United, while Arsenal had a £10 million bid for Everton's Phil Jagielka laughed off.
The Frenchman has made only enquiries for Blackburn's Chris Samba and Bolton's Gary Cahill.
Arsenal also face a fight to sign Anderlecht ace Romelu Lukaku.
Wenger has already made a £14 million offer for the 18-year-old striker while Manchester City and Chelsea are also involved a bidding war.
Arsenal have also lined up an offer for Valencia midfielder Juan Mata.
And Fabregas looks certain to leave with a Barcelona delegation in London for talks before offering £35 million, the newspaper added.
