Arsene Wenger is desperate to cling onto his oldies after failing to make any big signings during the summer following the departures of Robin van Persie and Alex Song.

Wenger has come under fire after Theo Walcott held the club to ransom stalling a move until January despite lifting the gloom at the Emirates after an impressive win over Liverpool at Anfield following two goalless draws.

With the returning Bacary Sagna also murmuring his discontent at where the club was heading, the Gunners boss has begun heaping praise on a player who has not started a league game since April, according to The Sun.

Wenger insists Swiss centre-back Johan Djourou, reportedly wanted by Napoli, still has a future at the Emirates.

He said: “I didn’t let Djourou leave as I love him as a player, and he loves the club.”

Sagna voiced his frustration at the high-profile summer exits and lamented the fact that they have gone seven years without winning a trophy.

He watched with envy as former Arsenal stars helped Manchester City lift the title last season.

“I am the last player from the 2007 starting XI remaining," he said.

“In May, I watched Manchester City show off. I watched Samir and Gael lift the trophy."

Sagna, in an interview with French newspaper L’Equipe, said: “I expected the departure of Robin van Persie. We all expected it.

“But Alex was a surprise. He is 24 and had three years remaining on his contract.”

Sagna, who is coming back from a broken leg, said: “I still do not understand. It is a huge loss for the club. When you see the two best players of last season leave, you have a lot of questions.”

Robin van Persie was sold to Manchester United for £22million, while Song went to Barcelona for £15m.
