England and Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere's recovery from an ankle injury has suffered a "little setback," concerned Gunners manager Arsene Wenger revealed on Friday.

Wilshere has not played at all this season after suffering a stress fracture in his right ankle on international duty last summer.

The 20-year-old initially hoped to let the injury heal itself but was eventually forced to go under the knife.

He had hoped to make a return to action in February but his recuperation has been thrown into limbo by the latest development.

"Wilshere had a little setback, which is under investigation," said Wenger.

"We don't know yet how bad it is. He has pain again in his ankle (when running).

"We stopped him right away. He is seeing a specialist today, so I do not want to give you any wrong information."

Any injury setback would be a blow to Arsenal as they attempt to claw back a five-point deficit to fourth-placed Chelsea in the race to qualify for next season's Champions League.
