The month-long DCC Ramadan Cricket tournament will get underway on Thursday when Seven Seas Strikers take on Interface Transworld.

The 25-over tournament, conducted under the auspices of Dubai Cricket Council (DCC), has 16 top teams vying for the title.

The matches, to be held at the Dubai Men’s College Fair Grounds Oval, start at 8pm.

Phoenix Medicine will face Interface Transworld in Friday’s match, while Ibsons will meet Fly Emirates on Saturday.

“16 teams from the ‘A’ and ‘B’ divisions are participating with each team getting chances to play three league matches. The top two teams from each group will qualify to the knock- out stage,” Mohamed Lokhandwala, honorary secretary of DCC said.

“A total of Dh32,000 is up for the grabs. The winning team will receive Dh20,000 while the runners up will be richer by Dh10,000. The best bowler and best batsman will get Dh500 each and the best player will receive Dh1000,” he said.

The semifinals will be on August 1 and 2 while the grand final is scheduled to be held on August 3.

“This will be the last tournament of our current season which ends in August. Though it is an Open Tournament, players will continue to represent the teams that they are registered for in the current season unless they get release through an NOC from their team management to play for another team," Lokhandwala added.

Earlier, speaking after the draw, Lokhandwala said: "DCC which has been conducting the Ramadan Tournament since many years with Dulsco as their sponsors at the old DCC grounds and in the past two years with sponsorship and support from Interface Transworld will continue with running the Ramadan tournament to provide cricket to all the clubs and players even though we do not have a sponsor for this year."
