Globelink Weststar Shipping Kochi Islanders riding on an unbeaten 92 from man of the match Mohammed Aqib won their quarter-final against Danube Mumbai Warriors by eight wickets at the Fairground Oval of the Dubai Men’s College.

The tournament is conducted by Dubai Cricket Council (DCC) and supported by Web Channel with Yas Sports, Saaiba Restaurant and Danube Buildmart as support sponsors.

Mumbai Warriors taking first strike were unable to dominate the Kochi attack.

Samiullah tried to give the team a brisk start with 17 from 13 balls with a six and a four but his opening partner was sent early to the pavilion after a mix-up with Samiullah resulted in his run-out.

Andri Berenger and Rohan Mustafa steadied the innings taking the score to 80.

Their departure followed by the dismissals of prolific scorer Vikranth Shetty (9) and Adnan Mufti (11) in quick succession saw Mumbai in all sorts of trouble at 87 for 6.

Mumbai managed a decent total mainly due to Mohammad Azam’s late onslaught.

Azam remained unbeaten on 31 from 24 balls with two sixes and a four and received good support from Yasir Shah (13 not out).

But all that proved futile once Mohammed Aqib took to the crease.

Aqib blazed along with his opening partner Laxman Sreekumar toying with the Mumbai attack.

Laxman scored a quick-fire 31 from 12 balls as Kochi reached 50 for 1 in just four overs.

Aqib carried on from where Laxman left off and made the Mumbai attack pay for some ordinary bowling.

He hit seven sixes and nine fours during his 45-ball knock of 92 to take his team past the target in 16.4 overs and into the semi-finals.
