Dubai Sports Council boost for Asian chess

The Dubai Sports Council (DSC) will henceforth be the sponsor for the Asian Cities Chess Team Championship that will be held for the ‘Dubai Cup’.

This was announced following an agreement signed between the DSC, world governing body for chess FIDE and the Asian Chess Federation (ACF) in Dubai on Sunday.

It was signed by FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and Dr Ahmad Al Sharif, Secretary-General DSC.

The last edition of this continental competition was held in Jakarta, Indonesia from April 21-29. The Chinese city of Shi Jiazhuang was the top seed followed by Tagaytay (Philippines), Astana (Kazakhstan), Tehran (Iran) and hosts Jakarta at this competition.

The competition draws all the chess talent from across Asia with the tournament in Indonesia boasting a strong field of 18 Grandmasters, two Women Grandmasters and eleven International Masters.

The tournament is normally a nine-round Swiss system with a total of $24,000 (Dh88,000) in cash prizes and the winner takes home the ‘Dubai Cup’.

As per the agreement that comes into force from 2013, the DSC shall award monetary support to Asian Cities Chess Teams Championship (Dubai Cup) along with the commitment to sponsor the cash prizes and trophies for the competition.
