India warns rival domestic field hockey factions

India's sports ministry has given the country's rival field hockey factions three days to unite or face sanctions.

Sports Minister Ajay Maken met officials from Hockey India and the Indian Hockey Federation on Saturday and gave them what he called "a balanced proposal ... with equal importance to both."

He added, "We have given them time till Tuesday evening to send their response in writing. We have told them to give us a joint response instead of separate ones. If they don't agree we will take action and also inform the Supreme Court as the matter is sub judice."

The IHF lost International Hockey Federation recognition in 2008 and was replaced by HI, but the IHF was revived by a court order last year, and the factions have been warring ever since.

Eight-time Olympic champ India has not won the title since 1980 and hit an all-time low when it failed to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Games.
