Mayweather offers boxing help to beaten UFC star Ronda Rousey

Floyd Mayweather has offered to help dethroned UFC world champion Ronda Rousey bounce back from a shock defeat by Holly Holm by improving her boxing skills.

Holm tamed the world's most feared female prizefighter Ronda Rousey with a stunning knockout victory for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bantamweight title in Australia on Sunday.

Mayweather put aside his public rivalry to reach out to Rousey who was beaten for the first time in her mixed martial arts career.

Holm, a former boxing champion, used her ringcraft to cut down angles and side step the aggressive Rousey, a former judoka champion, before delivering the knockout blow with a head kick in the second round.

Mayweather has sprung to the defence of  28-year-old Rousey, who traded insults with the unbeaten American boxing legend.

"I want Ronda Rousey to hold her head up high and don't let this discourage you. If you need help as far as with boxing, I'm here to help you," he told Fighthype.com.

"It's all about timing and inches. Her ground game is unbelievable. She'll be OK," said Mayweather, arguably the best defensive fighter in the ring.

The UFC star hit out at his domestic abuse record after beating him to 'Best Fighter' award at ESPYs in July.

Mayweather, 38, served two months of a three-month prison sentence in 2012 after pleading guilty to domestic violence.

"I wonder how Floyd feels to be beat by a woman for once" Rousey said after she won the award.

But Mayweather doesn't blame her for using his name.

"Even with the things that Ronda Rousey said about me, sometimes we need to be guided in the right way. Do I think that she really meant what she said? Absolutely not," he said lauding her rise in the sport.

"I commend Dana White and the Fertitta brothers for being able to take a female and make her so huge in a contact sport. I commend them for that, but she had to do her part also, and she did her part," said Mayweather urging Rousey not to rush back but to refocus on her career.

There were reports after the fight of a re-match between the newly-crowned champion Holm and Rousey.

"They need to build Ronda Rousey back up, her confidence back up, even though I think she's probably still confident. Let Holly fight, defend the title a few times, and build it. That's what I would do, looking at it as being a former fighter and now promoter. I wouldn't rush it," said Mayweather, who officially retired with a 49-0 record after beating Andre Berto in September.

Rousey has said she would be back after "a little bit of time" after being hospitalised following the fight.

The US cult figure assured her supporters she has no serious health concerns and would be back in the octagon before long.

"I just wanted to thank everyone for the love and support," Rousey said in a statement posted on Instagram. "I appreciate the concerns about my health, but I'm fine.

"As I had mentioned before, I'm going to take a little bit of time, but I'll be back."
