A consignment of 68,400 tablets of 2 mg Rivotril (generic name-Clonaz-spam), valued at Rs3.5 million and illegally imported from both India and Pakistan, were destroyed by Sri Lanka Customs on Wednesday, ‘The Island’ reported.

The tablets were allegedly being used as an intoxicant by both boys attending top rung Colombo schools and night club dancers.

Sri Lanka Customs Director Leslie Gamini said, “We have found that some of the schoolboys of elite Colombo schools consume this at both parties and at the Colombo General Cemetery at night. It is said to give them a feeling of well being and we have destroyed this consignment not only because it is illegally imported, but because of the danger it poses to society.”

“The tablet – Rivotril, is known in some social circles as party tablet and in some others as ‘Pissu Beheth’ (mad medicine) due to the sensation it creates,” Gamini said and added that these tablets were covertly sold at rates between Rs30 and Rs100 each in the market.

The Customs also destroyed Rs17 million worth of illegally imported non-narcotic drugs, imported from India and Pakistan during the last month, within the Bandaranaike International Airport’s Customs premises.
