Saudi authorities in a central province have told restaurants which make shawarma they can sell this dish again following a ban of more than three months during the hot summer season, a local daily said on Wednesday.

But the municipal authorities in Al-Ihsaa warned the hundreds of restaurants in the province that they face closure if they do not adhere to public health rules.

“The restaurants which sell shawarma in Al-Ihsaa have welcomed the decision to suspend the ban but they were told that they must abide by hygienic and safety rules,” the Arabic language daily Alyoum said.

“The decision to ban the sale of shawarma during summer followed the poisoning of 48 people after eating this kind of food early this year…restaurants were also told the prepare for another ban next summer.”
