Sales of the iPhone 5s and the 5c, Apple’s newly launched editions to its smartphone family, have been strong on day one of the Gitex Shopper, according to the select retailers that have them in stock.

However, shoppers may want to hold off making a beeline to the ongoing retail expo just yet, with over-the- counter prices being quoted at the shopper, considerably higher than what is available online.

Emirates 24|7 put this to the test, with Crazydeals.ae, one of the online retailers that has a stand at the shopper this year, selling the white 16GB iPhone 5s for Dh3,699, while the black version is Dh100 less.

Online, the same retailer is selling the former colour for Dh3,399 and the black for Dh3,089.
Similarly, the 16GB iPhone 5c starts at Dh2,200 at Gitex; online they start at Dh2,099, going up by Dh50 for in- demand shades such as pink.

Even the limited edition iPhone 5s gold is priced at Dh5,000 at Gitex and Dh4,599 online.

So what gives?

You may want to read the fine print first.

Gangandeep Singh, the iPhone salesperson at Gitex Shopper for the retailer said: “We are offering cash-back vouchers on the iPhone 5s and the 5c, upto Dh400.

Plus, some bundle offers are also in store for our customers.
“If you actually see, we are offering up to a 15 per cent discount on these phones on the prices that have been set by the vendor.”

Speaking about the sales of the two new iPhones, Singh continued: “The high price of the iPhone 5s Gold has found lesser takers, but the black and the white versions are still selling fast.

“In terms of total sales of the 5s, we can say 50 per cent of the buyers purchased the black, 40 per cent opted for the white and only 10 per cent went for the gold.”

In the iPhone 5c category, Singh revealed that mainly females preferred the colourful phone, with the yellow and the white being the fast sellers.

However, when quizzed, Singh said the older iPhone 5 was still a bestseller, adding: “We had one customer alone snap up 55 pieces of the phone on day one of Gitex.

“But amongst the 500 odd sales across all iPhone 5 categories on day one with us, it is clear that the 5s is more popular with Dubai residents than the 5c.”
