Dubai: Going abroad but forgot to bring along your International Driving Permit (IDP)? You can print it in just five minutes, right at Dubai International Airport. Here’s how.

What is an International Driving Permit?

The IDP is an official document issued under the International Road Traffic Convention, which, when accompanied by a valid driver’s licence, allows you to legally drive or rent a vehicle in over 150 countries. It is essentially an internationally recognised translation of a motorist’s domestic driving licence.

The IDP is valid for one year from its date of issue.

Where can I obtain my IDP in Dubai?

If you are travelling abroad as a UAE citizen or resident, you can get an IDP issued to you right at the Dubai International Airport, thanks to a new service.

On September 14, the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFA), in collaboration with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the Emirates Automobile and Touring Club, and Amer Centres in Dubai, announced the launch of an instant IDP issuance service at Dubai International Airport.

Located at the Customer Happiness Centre at DXB’s Terminal 3 Arrivals Hall, the service is available 24/7 to UAE citizens and residents holding a valid UAE driving licence.

The initiative has a host of benefits for UAE-based travellers who would like to rent and drive vehicles abroad:

How does it work?

Follow these steps to pick up your IDP:

Head to the Customer Happiness Centre at DXB’s Terminal 3 Arrivals Hall.

Approach a service agent with your documents. According to the GDRFA, customers are required to present the following:

  • Valid Emirates ID
  • Valid UAE driving licence
  • Copy of your passport
  • Personal photograph

The agent keys in your data and scans your documents. The system automatically verifies your information and approves the request instantly.

You will receive your printed IDP in just five minutes.
