Dubai: Al Zahra Hospital Dubai is proud to highlight the internationally published work of Dr. Sharda Brata Ghosh, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist, whose innovative Ghosh Suture, also known as the Alternate Sequential Suture Tightening Technique (ASSTT), represents a significant advancement in the surgical management of severe postpartum hemorrhage (PPH)—one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. She has also presented this technique in the annual Conference of AICOG 2026 and International Conference on OBGY & Woman health Dubai 2025.
Postpartum hemorrhage is a life-threatening obstetric emergency that requires rapid intervention to control excessive bleeding following childbirth. In many severe cases, emergency hysterectomy may become necessary to save a mother's life, resulting in permanent loss of fertility.
Developed by Dr. Ghosh and published in international peer-reviewed medical literature, the Ghosh Suture was designed to provide a rapid, effective uterine compression technique that helps control bleeding while preserving the uterus whenever clinically appropriate.
Unlike conventional uterine compression sutures that may require additional uterine incisions or complex surgical steps, the Ghosh Suture utilizes an alternate sequential tightening technique that allows gradual and controlled compression of the uterus. The procedure is simple, efficient, and can be completed in approximately four minutes, making it particularly valuable during time-critical obstetric emergencies.
The technique has been applied in more than 100 reported clinical cases involving uterine atony and selected cases of placenta accreta, demonstrating promising outcomes in controlling severe bleeding while reducing the need for emergency hysterectomy, according to the published clinical study.
"Every minute is critical when managing severe postpartum hemorrhage. The objective is always to stop bleeding as quickly as possible while preserving the uterus whenever it is safe and feasible for the patient. The development of the Ghosh Suture was driven by this goal—to provide a simple, reproducible technique that can help save lives and preserve future fertility."Dr. Sharda Brata Ghosh, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist, Al Zahra Hospital Dubai
