Dubai: Traders of distinguished car registration numbers have reported a surge in demand across the market, driven by strong business activity and growing interest from investors of various nationalities. They noted that rare plate numbers, particularly two-digit, three-digit and older series numbers in Dubai, remain among the most sought-after assets in the market.

Traders said that buying distinguished registration numbers has become a form of investment, but one that requires specific knowledge and experience. Investors must understand market dynamics, pricing structures and resale opportunities. They added that the most desirable plates are those that appeal to a broad customer base, are rare or sequential, and carry older code series such as (A), (B) and (C) in Dubai. Numbers containing digits such as 7, 1 or 0 are particularly popular among buyers.

A trader specialising in distinguished number plates, identified as (A.A.), said the market is currently witnessing strong demand, supported by growth in various business sectors and increasing interest from investors, particularly from Asia and Europe, as well as buyers seeking exclusivity for their vehicles.

He noted that distinguished number plates have seen steady appreciation over recent years, making them attractive long-term investments. As an example, he said a distinguished four-digit plate that sold for between AED 2,000 and AED 3,000 before the pandemic later rose to between AED 4,000 and AED 5,000, and now commands around AED 18,000.

He added that Dubai and Abu Dhabi number plates are the most sought-after in the market, followed by plates from the Northern Emirates. The rarer the number and the older the code series, the higher the demand and price.

Another trader, identified as (H. Rashid), said the market is experiencing significant growth and is valued both as a hobby and as a long-term investment. However, he stressed that successful investment requires experience and market knowledge.

“The first rule is understanding the true value of the plate before purchasing,” he said. “Investors should carefully research prices, compare similar numbers and avoid paying inflated amounts that may make resale difficult or result in losses.”

He explained that attractive numbers are those that appeal to the widest segment of buyers and are easy to resell. Dubai plates carrying older code series such as (A), (B) and (C) continue to hold strong appeal. According to him, ordinary two-digit plate numbers currently range between AED 4.5 million and AED 6 million, depending on the specific number and whether it includes sought-after digits such as 0, 1 or 7.

He added that distinguished plates may consist of four or five digits, with value determined by rarity, sequence, code series and the presence of desirable digits. While single-digit numbers command the highest prices, followed by double-digit and triple-digit plates, some four-digit numbers can exceed the value of three-digit plates if they are particularly rare, sequential or associated with older code series.

A third trader, identified as (Khalifa M.), said distinguished number plates combine prestige, personal interest and investment potential. Some buyers acquire numbers for personal use, while others purchase them purely as investment assets.

He stressed that anyone considering entering the market should have a strong understanding of pricing, market trends and investment criteria to avoid losses. He added that investors should focus on acquiring numbers that are genuinely distinguished, rare and highly marketable, preferably from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, which continue to attract the highest levels of demand.

He also advised investors to study the market carefully and avoid rushing to sell, noting that registration number investment is generally more rewarding when approached as a long-term strategy.
