For residents, the soaring towers of Shaikh Zayed Road are quintessentially Dubai. But the skyline would be incomplete without a blue-grey streak underscoring it – the Dubai Metro.
Since its launch in 2009, the fully automated Dubai Metro has carried more than 2.8 billion passengers to their destinations, offering fast transport, reliable scheduling, and integrated connectivity. Travellers have the choice of two main lines that span nearly 90km: Red and Green. This is going to change, however with the upcoming Blue Line, which will feature the world’s tallest Metro station, and the newly announced Gold Line.
The new Lines align with the 2040 Dubai Urban Master Plan, which aims to develop a ‘20-minute city’, wherein 55% of residents live within walking distance of public transit, and 80% of essential services are within a 20-minute reach for residents of the city.
How are the new public transport routes going to change the way you commute around Dubai? We break it down for you below.
Dubai Metro Blue Line
With official construction beginning last year, the Blue Line is scheduled to open on September 9, 2029, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Metro.
Spanning 30km and comprising 14 stations, the Blue Line is the result of a massive Dh56 billion investment in the city’s transport infrastructure. Part of the Blue Line – about 15.5km – will be underground, while 14.5km will remain above ground. The project will link the existing Red and Green Lines, and is expected to reduce traffic congestion in the city by 20%.
Routes and area coverage
The Blue Line’s 30km track will be split into two routes – the first covering 21km, and the second covering the remaining 9km.
First route: The first route features 10 stations. It starts from the Al Khor Interchange Station of the Green Line, and runs through Dubai Festival City, Dubai Creek Harbour and Ras Al Khor, after which it stops at International City 1. At this stop, commuters can enter an underground interchange station, and progress to International City 2 and 3, and further on to Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City. The train route terminates at Al Ruwaiyah 3 Depot.
Second route: The second route has four stations, beginning from the Centrepoint Interchange Station on the Red Line. It then passes through Mirdif and Al Warqa, before concluding at the International City 1 underground interchange station, where it connects to the first route.
The Blue Line is set to connect nine strategic areas in the city, offering commuters direct access to public transport:
- Dubai International Airport
- Mirdif
- Al Warqa
- International City 1 and 2
- Dubai Silicon Oasis
- Academic City
- Ras Al Khor Industrial Area
- Dubai Creek Harbour
- Dubai Festival City
Facilities
The Blue Line’s 14 stations will be divided into nine elevated and five underground stations, as well as three major interchange stations.
In the elevated stations of the Blue Line, the exterior design of the trains is inspired by seashells. Its interiors reflect design elements based on the thematic models of earth, water, fire, air, and heritage.
Commuters on the Dubai Metro are already used to modern infrastructure, bespoke amenities and accessible facilities at every station. The Blue Line is no different. Natural lighting, premium materials and integrated urban placemaking are also going to be key components of these stations.
Key features
The Blue Line will feature several unique amenities that are not just going to add convenience to travellers’ commutes, but also aesthetic appeal to the city’s urban landscape.
- First Metro bridge over Dubai Creek: The Metro bridge over Dubai Creek, spanning 1.3km, will be the first of its kind for the city’s public transport network. It will connect Al Jaddaf to Dubai Creek Harbour and offers spectacular views of the waterway.
- Largest underground interchange station: The International City 1 station, coming up on the Blue Line, is set to be the largest underground interchange station in the Dubai Metro system. It will cover 44,000 square metres and expects to see 350,000 passengers daily. The station links high-density residential and commercial zones, including International City and Silicon Oasis.
- World’s tallest Metro station: Rising to a lofty 74 metres, Emaar Properties’ station is going to be the world’s tallest Metro station upon completion. The station has been designed by acclaimed American architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) – the firm behind the Sears Tower in Chicago, US, and the Olympic Tower in New York. Emaar Properties station’s striking design features massive interiors, with limestone finishes, bronze-toned metal panels, tall glass panels, and granite flooring. Bright and airy, with plenty of natural light, and landscaped areas, trees, and restaurants, the station extends for three levels, is expected to cover an area of 11,000 square kilometres, and handle up to 160,000 passengers daily.
Dubai Metro Gold Line
On April 22 this year, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced the Dh34 billion Gold Line project, which is expected to benefit 1.5 million residents.
Once completed, the Gold Line will extend the Dubai Metro network by 25%, connecting it to existing Metro lines and even Etihad Rail. Daily ridership on this Line is expected to reach 465,000 passengers beyond 2040. The Dubai Media Office announced that it would open on September 9, 2032.
Routes and area coverage
As the first fully integrated underground Metro route in Dubai, the Gold Line will run for 42km, and strengthen connectivity to 55 major real estate developments that are currently under construction. This Line is expected to feature an advanced tunnel network that’s equivalent to twice the current number of Dubai Metro tunnels.
The Gold Line will include 18 stations that cover 15 strategic areas around Dubai, beginning in Dubai’s historic centre, Al Ghubaiba, and ending at Jumeirah Golf Estates.
Four interchange stations have been planned along the Gold Line at the following points:
- Al Ghubaiba
- Business Bay
- Jumeirah Golf Estates
- Etihad Rail Station
