When Turkish resident Yahya Mehmet Cem Söyler arrived in Dubai seven years ago as a university student, he felt a little lost and homesick in his first year. It’s the only time he ever considered returning to Turkey.
With a little time, however, he found his place in the UAE. In fact, he said he was pushed into action, thanks to the dynamic energy of the country.
Söyler explained: “The UAE teaches resilience and adaptability. It pushes you out of your comfort zone and helps you grow quickly. It was challenging [initially]. However, once I found the UAE to be a comfortable place to live, full of tolerance and opportunities, I loved this country more, and decided to stay. I now consider it home.”
The 27-year-old Master’s degree student is now pursuing a career in data science and artificial intelligence, and he feels Dubai – a city that is always adopting new technologies and discovering innovative, futuristic solutions to everyday problems – provides the perfect ecosystem for growth.
Söyler said: “What makes me stay is the fast-paced environment, global exposure, and the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally. [Dubai] offers a dynamic environment that aligns with my goals and career growth.”
Still, despite its fast-paced lifestyle, there is a sense of balance in the way things are done around the UAE, according to Söyler. This intriguing mix is what keeps people both energised and motivated in their careers, and relaxed and content in their downtime.
Söyler explained: “Adapting between very different lifestyles, from the fast-paced city life of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, to quieter areas like Al Ain – that kind of rapid adjustment is quite unique. The UAE offers a safe, structured, and multicultural environment where growth is a constant. That balance is what makes it feel like home.”
For Söyler, now, there’s no looking back, only ahead, to the future.
From being homesick, to calling Dubai his home, Söyler said his journey helped him realise what long-time residents here already know: “The UAE truly is one of the best choices of places to live, and build your career.”
