RTA completes 90% of Dubai Harbour access bridge project to boost connectivity
5km bridge to cut travel time and handle 6,000 vehicles per hour

Dubai: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed 90% of a major bridge development project leading to the entrances and exits of Dubai Harbour, in cooperation with Shamal Holding.
The project involves constructing a 1,500-metre bridge with two lanes in each direction, providing direct access between Sheikh Zayed Road and Dubai Harbour — one of the emirate’s key waterfront and tourism destinations, home to the largest yacht marinas in the Middle East. The initiative is part of RTA’s efforts to enhance road network efficiency, support urban and tourism growth, and improve connectivity to major attractions.
Significant progress has been made, with most foundation works, columns, and concrete barriers completed. The project workforce includes 1,400 engineers and workers across 12 teams, delivering over 4 million working hours while maintaining high safety standards. Construction has used more than 45,000 cubic metres of concrete and 8,273 tonnes of steel.
According to the project timeline, traffic from Sheikh Zayed Road (from both Deira and Jebel Ali directions) to Dubai Harbour will open in June. In July, traffic will begin flowing from Dubai Harbour towards Al Naseem Street, as well as towards the intersection of King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street and Al Naseem Street.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, said the project reflects leadership directives to develop integrated infrastructure that supports Dubai’s rapid urban and economic growth. He noted that the initiative is part of RTA’s ongoing efforts to build a connected road network and enhance readiness for future development.
He added that the project represents strong public-private sector collaboration, supporting access to Dubai Harbour and improving transportation efficiency and quality of life in line with Dubai’s vision to be one of the world’s best cities to live and work.
Al Tayer explained that the bridge starts from Interchange 5 on Sheikh Zayed Road near the American University in Dubai, passing through Al Naseem Street and Al Falak Street, crossing King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street, and extending to Dubai Harbour Road. The bridge will accommodate up to 6,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
The project also includes upgrades at four major intersections along the route, which will enhance traffic flow and connectivity. Once completed, travel time to and from Dubai Harbour is expected to be reduced from 12 minutes to just 3 minutes.
Abdullah Bin Habtoor, CEO of Shamal Holding, described the bridge as a major milestone in the development of Dubai Harbour and highlighted the importance of strong collaboration with the RTA. He said the project will support the area’s growth as a leading waterfront destination and enhance long-term value for the city.
Dubai Harbour is strategically located between Bluewaters Island and Palm Jumeirah and is close to major landmarks such as Burj Al Arab. The area offers a range of residential, retail, and entertainment options, with a 1.5-kilometre development underway that includes 24 residential towers and around 7,500 apartments.
