Abu Dhabi: The United Arab Emirates has strongly condemned the unprovoked terrorist attack targeting an electricity generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra region. The attack was carried out by a drone that entered the country’s airspace from the western border, without causing any injuries or impact on radiation safety levels.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said that such attacks represent a dangerous escalation, an unacceptable act of aggression and a direct threat to the country’s security.

The ministry stressed that targeting peaceful nuclear energy facilities is a flagrant violation of international law, the UN Charter and the principles of humanitarian law, given the serious risks posed to civilians, the environment and regional and international security.

It also emphasised that relevant international standards and agreements, including principles and resolutions of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), highlight the need to protect peaceful nuclear facilities and ensure their safety from any hostile or military threats.

The UAE affirmed that it will not tolerate any threat to its security and sovereignty under any circumstances and reserves its full sovereign, legitimate, diplomatic and military rights to respond to any threats or attacks. It said any response would aim to protect national security, territorial integrity and the safety of citizens, residents and visitors, in accordance with international law.

The ministry further underlined that targeting vital civilian infrastructure is unequivocally condemned under all legal and humanitarian norms, calling for an immediate halt to such attacks and full compliance with the cessation of hostilities.
