Hats, glorious hats!

Where would the 2012 head be without them?

Since the Duchess of Cambridge wed Prince William last year, all eyes have been on what she wears.

And it seems that Princess Catherine is privy to hats and fascinators.

They were on show to help kick off the start of London Fashion Week, the bi-annual event where dozens of designers reveal what we'll wearing next season.

The renewed popularity of hats can be traced to two things - the Royal Wedding and the global economic downturn.

It's much cheaper to invest in an accessory than it is to in a full suit, for instance.

One of the world's most respected milliners Stephen Jones says it's never been a better time to invest in a little something for the head.

"I mean almost more important now than they have been in my career - in the past 30 years."

Fashion designer Zandra Rhodes says the hats trend has made it outside the British isles.

"I mean now, you go the races you know like in California as well, they're all in hats, they're all in little somethings that are all influenced by the British hat industry".

The duo are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year with an ingenious collection for Autumn/Winter.

The bright colours the designers are reknowned for were there, but also, the pair took photographs of fabric scraps, put together in a collage, and the photos were digitally printed onto outfits.

It's this innovation which makes fashion one of the biggest industries in Britain.

The British Fashion Council's Chairman Harold Tillman filled in the figures.

"We are talking about fashion almost 21 billion pounds a year as a contribution to our economy it's twice the size of the chemical industry, the motor industry."

This is one of the biggest London Fashion Weeks in recent years, sparked by this summer's Olympics and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Amongst some of the designers showing will be Burberry, Mulberry, Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood and an inagural show by McQ.

It's the younger, diffusion range by Alexander McQueen, the label behind the Duchess of Cambridge's wedding dress.
