A court in Ajman sentenced an Arab woman to a suspended one year in prison on charges of forging official papers and having two husbands at the same time.

The woman went on trial in the northern emirate after her first husband filed a law suit accusing her of marrying another man after forging documents showing that he had divorced her in their home country.

The husband, in his 40s, denied divorcing her and told court that he had not travelled  home with his wife at that time.

The court found that the woman had forged divorce documents to marry another man and convicted her of polyandry and forgery.

According to the Arabic language daily 'Al Bayan', the man with three children told the court that his wife flew home and returned to the UAE with another husband.

“He told the court he was shocked to learn that she returned to the UAE but not to her home. He then learned that she was living with another husband, which is prohibited in Islam because he had not divorced her,” the paper said.

It said the judge issued a reduced sentence against the wife after her first husband dropped the case and asked for divorce.
