Inglewood, California: Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attended the United States’ World Cup opener against Paraguay rather than Canada’s first match, citing personal reasons for his decision.

Trudeau was present at the match held at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, where the United States defeated Paraguay 4–1. On the same day, Canada opened its campaign against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto, with the match ending in a 1–1 draw.

Trudeau explained his absence from the Canada game in a post on X, stating that he chose to attend the U.S. match because his partner, Katy Perry, performed in the pre-match show.

“Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call. But you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup,” he wrote.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is being co-hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Trudeau served as Canada’s prime minister from 2015 to 2025.
