iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus, and the winner is…

There is a war of sorts that has broken out between, well not between Samsung and Apple, but between the latter’s own two smartphones that was launched earlier this month.

Apple launched two new iPhone 6 devices this year – the 4.7 inch iPhone 6 and the 5.5 inch iPhone 6 Plus, meant for those preferring a larger screen.

Both devices were available for pre-order and have already started selling in key markets in Europe and the United States.

The device is also available in the UAE, thanks to the grey market, which has priced it around Dh3,500 to Dh6,000. The device will also be available here through authorised retailers next week and will be available for purchase on contract from local telecom operators du and etisalat.

According to reports, the iPhone 6 units are currently outperforming iPhone 6 Plus in terms of deliveries. TechCrunch has reported quoting Mobile analytics firm MixPanel that the smaller version has taken on an early lead providing an indication as to what iPhone fans’ preferences are.

And it’s not a small lead. The latest result (at 9am on Sunday September 21), points out an iPhone 6 adoption rate of 3.55 per cent compared to a mere 0.50 per cent for the iPhone 6 Plus.

Now this could just be early trends emerging out of a shortage of available 6 Plus stocks. At many retail stores, stocks of iPhone6 Plus models ran out early compared to iPhone 6, due to shortage of supply as well as excessive demand. Many who came later had to do with iPhone 6 models.

However, there are some who genuinely prefer the iPhone 6 over the 6 Plus, and still many who opted out of their iPhone 6 Plus preorders and chose iPhone 6 instead.

For those of iPhone fans who have not yet made up your mind here are some additional tips that might indeed help you choose between the two:

The most important and obvious difference is the screen size. While the smaller screen - at 4.7 inch it is actually much bigger compared to the iPhone 5S – is preferred by many who prefer their smartphone for all major tasks except read a lot or browse videos.

For iPhone fans who are used to their 4 inch devices, a 4.7-inch device itself is a significant boost. The iPhone 6 can still be managed with a single hand, but you would definitely need to use both your hands for the phablet sized 6 Plus. Also it is much easy to slide the iPhone 6 into your pocket compared to the iPhone 6 Plus.

In terms of design both models have shifted out of the earlier moulds, and quite comfortably into a much more curvier edges. Both have similar features such as an aluminum body with gold, grey and silver colour options. While the iPhone 6 is just 6.8 mm thick and weighs just 129 grams, the 6 Plus is slightly thicker with a 7.1mm rim and naturally weighs heavier at 172 grams.

In terms of specs both devices run on iOS 8 with A 8 processors, a dual-core 1.4GHz 64-bit CPU and therefore delivers the same experience.

However, in terms of display resolution, both devices use IPS displays, although the iPhone 6 has a Retina HD LCD with a 1334 x 750 resolution at 326 ppi, the iPhone 6 Plus comes with a 5.5inch 1920 x 1080 resolution at a much higher 400 ppi.

The camera features on both the devices are the same. Both the models come with an 8 MP rear camera 1/3.06-inch sensor, true-tone flash and f/2.2 aperture with dual-LED flash. However as the iPhone 6 Plus is considered a bit more superior as it comes with an optical image stabilization. The iPhone 6 comes with a digital image stabilization, which basically uses the camera software to stabilize the images unlike the OIS which uses the camera lens features and is considered much more superior.

Finally, the battery life. The iPhone 6 has a 1,810 mAh battery that lasts for almost 11 hours of continuous video streaming. Despite being larger the iPhone 6 plus has better battery life as it comes with a  2.915 mAh battery and lasts for almost 14 hours of continuous video streaming.
