Huawei, which on Monday launched its Ascend Mate, the massive 6.1-inch Phablet, and the world’s fastest 4G phone -- the Ascend P2 --has one significant advantage over its rival -- affordability.

The phones are priced between Dh1,500 to Dh1,600 and are almost Dh1,000 cheaper compared to its other Android competitors, including the Samsung S4, HTC One and Sony Xperia Z.

Ashraf Fawakherji, Vice President, at Huawei’s Middle East office, told Emirates 24|7 that the company is ready to take over the Middle East market.

“We are aiming for the number three slot here to start with,” he said on the sidelines of the launch at the Armani Hotel in Burj Khalifa.

“We have our full range of smart phones and feature phones available in the region now. Our year on year growth figures is impressive. We grew 140 per cent last year. This year is very crucial as we expect at least 50 to 65 per cent of feature phone users switching to smart phones,” he said.

When asked about the growing competition, he said: “Our idea is to satifsy the consumer and offer great value. Our price structure does that and our smart phones are designed with attractive features,” he added.

The Ascend P2, which runs on Android Jelly Bean, became the first phone to support LTE Cat 4, enabling it to reach download speeds of up to 150Mbps. Network  carriers including Etisalat and du in the UAE can provide speeds of upto 100Mbps only.

The 6.1 inch Ascend Mate with its 4050mAh battery can provide 40 hours of talk time and 216 hours of standby time.
