Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways intends to boost flights to China and Germany this month within ongoing expansion plans by one of the world’s fastest growing carriers, its CEO has said.

James Hogan said Etihad has just added new destinations in Maldives and Seychelles and is planning to fly to the southwest Chinese town of Chengdu and Dusseldorf in Germany before the end of this year.

He said the company is planning four non-stop return services per week to Chengdu and this will be followed by further expansion of the Chinese network in March, when non-stop services to Shanghai four times a week are launched.

Writing in the company’s monthly magazine, Etishadinflight, he said Dusseldorf, the capital of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, would also be served by four non-stop return services per week.

“We are expanding this network because the Dusseldorf catchment area is the second largest in Europe outside of London and also includes the eastern part of the Netherlands,” he said.

“Finally, last month saw all of us at Etihad Airways celebrate our eighth birthday… in that short period of time, we have grown in to a global brand with a worldwide network of 88passenger and cargo destinations.”
