Qatar Airways will expand its operations from the UAE with flights starting from two new UAE airports next week.

Qatar’s national carrier will start flying from Dubai’s new Al Maktoum International Airport and Sharjah International Airport from March 1. Currently it flies from Dubai International and Abu Dhabi International Airport.

“Fly from any of our four gateways across UAE to over 130 destinations worldwide via Doha,” the airline said.

Qatar Airways is the biggest airline to start operations from Al Maktoum Airport – giving a much-needed major boost to the new airport.

A number of foreign carriers including Malaysian Airlines, Philippines’ PAL Express, Transaero Airlines and Equatorial Congo Airlines will fly temporarily from Al Maktoum Airport from May 1, 2014 due to closure of a Dubai International Airport runway for the maintenance.

Qatar Airways said last year it would have 14 flights each every week to Sharjah and Al Maktoum airports.

Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker earlier said: “The ever increasing demand for flights to the UAE has provided the business case for expanding our services to Sharjah and Dubai World Central. The location of both airports will offer travellers alternative options to reach their final destination when flying to Dubai.”
