UAE firms files for first recycling patent

WMS Metal Industries, one of the top 100 SMEs in Dubai, has filed for patent for its locally designed and manufactured ENVIRO-Waste Closed Loop Recycling System.

As a local company WMS realised the importance of recycling to the UAE, one of the top waste generating countries (per capita) in the world, and recognised the importance of developing a solution that would minimise the impact this waste has on our environment.

Mohammed Nassar, Founder and Managing Partner at WMS Metal Industries, said: “The high volume of waste generated is a regional issue that we have gotten ourselves into, it is also our responsibility to find a solution for this issue. We had to develop a solution that was designed for the region and by the region. We should view this as an opportunity to allow regional ideas to develop solutions to this issue.”

The patent pending ENVIRO-Waste Closed Loop Recycling System is composed of two different pieces.

The first is the ENVIRO-Waste Separator system which, in essence, is a system that can be retro-fitted on garbage chutes in existing buildings or new buildings that facilitates sorting waste without modifying daily habitual behavior. The second piece of the system is the ENVIRO-Waste tracking system, a system which is able to track each garbage bag back to the individual apartment from which it was disposed to determine which residential unit has in-fact been successfully recycling and which one has not. The purpose of the tracking system is to compensate units that have been recycling, and educate units that have not.

WMS has previously been awarded the BGreen and Big Project Green Building Project of the year 2011 for the installation of the waste recycling and management system at the Princess Noorah University in Riyadh, KSA, as well as having placed as finalists at the annual Big 5 GAIA 2011 awards for developing a product that truly embraces the concept of Green.
