The UAE’s Ministry of Labour will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian government soon to further safeguard the rights of Indian workers in the UAE, The Times of India (TOI) reported on Thursday.

"We are awaiting a formal date of approval from the UAE side and it should happen soon," Indian ambassador to the UAE, MK Lokesh told the daily.

Union minister for overseas Indian affairs Vayalar Ravi, who is in the UAE, met Saqr Gobash, UAE Minister for labour, to discuss the modalities of the MoU and amendment to an existing agreement pertaining to labour issues.

"I have invited the UAE labour minister to New Delhi to sign the agreement and he has agreed. We need amendments to the MoUs already signed in this regard,’’ Ravi was quoted by the paper.

"The new MoU will further protect the rights of Indian housemaids working in the UAE with revised wages and deposits against hiring them. We are considering revision of their wages soon," he added.
