Iraq’s government has agreed to fund the planned airport in the central Karbala governorate and global firms will soon be invited to bid for the project, a news network in the war-battered Arab country reported on Sunday.
“The federal government has agreed to finance Al Hussein airport project instead of the local government given its high costs,” ‘Aletijah’ press said, quoting Zuhair Abu Dakkah, a member of Karbala’s governing council.

He said Karbala had signed an agreement in this regard with the transport ministry in Baghdad, adding that it also includes inviting international companies to bid for the project in line with the planned airport specifications.

He said the governing council had already designated a land for the project, which he described as “one of the biggest airport projects in Iraq.”

An Iraqi official said last month the contract would be awarded to multi-companies on an investment basis, adding that a French firm had prepared the designs for the project, which will handle up to 20 million passengers a year.
