Sony has announced that its PS4 units have finally crossed the 7 million sales mark fighting out Microsoft’s Xbox One as both companies are slogging it out for supremacy.

Sony in its just released announcement said that PS4 has cumulatively sold through more than 7.0 million units globally as of April 6th, 2014.

Sony also said that PS4 software sales added up to more than 20.5 million copies sold at retail and PlayStation Store worldwide as of April 13th, 2014.

Just last month Sony had announced that it had sold about 6 million units of PS4 in four months.

Microsoft on the other hand has not released any official sales figures since January when it said that it had sold about 3.9 million Xbox One units.

Its almost two months since and Xbox has been performing well in key markets especially after it bundled Titanfall for $499.99.

The deal includes Xbox One, Titanfall, and a month of Xbox Live Gold, all for the same price as a standard Xbox One. Although sales picked up in some markets, it was not sufficient enough for it to take on the PS4. According to VG Charts for example last month’s statistics pointed to PS4 leading by almost 2.7 million when compared to the Xbox One. As of March 16 it had put the Xbox one sales at 4.19 million while PS4 had sold 6.89 million.

Microsoft though is not giving up and is trying harder. Its latest update which started rolling out earlier this week includes a number of new features and fixes such as improvements in game and app saves, in friend notifications, Kinect voice and motion improvements among others.

Meanwhile Sony too has announced that it will soon be rolling out new updates including a video editing feature SHAREfactory.

With SHAREfactory, users can combine captured video clips for editing, personalize them with special effects using filters, transitions, and themes, as well as share them with friends and social networks.

Users can also personalize videos by adding text, stickers, and a set of included audio tracks, as well as video commentary with picture-in-picture capability with PlayStation Camera. It also allows a user to import original music to add to the custom soundtrack for the video.

Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc making the announcement of achieving 7 million sales said, "The PS4 journey has just begun, and although we are still facing difficulties keeping up with the strong demand worldwide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to meet the needs of our customers, and surpassing the wildest expectations of gamers by delivering new user experiences that inspire and engage. We look forward to unveiling many of these experiences to our fans in the coming months."
